The Lacoste crocodile was born from a wager: in 1923, the captain of the tennis team promised young René Lacoste a crocodile-skin suitcase if he won a difficult match. He lost the match, but the American press nicknamed him "the Crocodile" regardless for his tenacity on the court, a name that in 1927 became the logo stitched onto his blazer, the first brand-symbol ever placed on an item of clothing. The brand launched its own line of sunglasses in 1981, bringing the same French sporting spirit to the face.
